Exchange Email Settings for Gmail: A Better Alternative to IMAP

IMAP has long been considered a reliable email protocol, but it's not without its drawbacks. One of the main issues with using Gmail via IMAP is the duplication of draft messages when stored on the server, which can be frustrating and confusing. Additionally, new messages may take some time to push through, making it feel slower than other protocols.

Fortunately, there's a better alternative: Exchange ActiveSync. In 2010, Google licensed this technology from Microsoft for use on mobile platforms that connect to their services. This protocol offers faster syncing and eliminates the issue of duplicate draft messages.

To set up Gmail with Exchange ActiveSync, you'll need to follow these steps. First, make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi or has a stable internet connection. Then, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Other > Microsoft Exchange.

Next, enter the required information:

* Email address: 'your Gmail address'

* Domain: @gmail.com

* Username: 'your Gmail username'

* Password: 'your Gmail password'

You will then be prompted to select which contacts and calendars you want to sync. If you have no contacts on your device, selecting 'Keep on my iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch)' will ensure that the contents of your All Contacts group are synced.

If you choose to keep existing contacts, you'll need to select 'Delete Existing Contacts' during the Google Sync install and then manually add your contacts to your device. This will also allow you to continue syncing with your computer via iTunes.

Once you've set up your email account, you can customize your notification settings for new invitations. To do this:

1. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars

2. Select the calendar you want to sync

3. Click on Notifications

To receive and respond to meeting requests on your device, both Mail and Calendar need to be turned on, and New Invitations needs to be enabled in your Google Calendar settings.

By following these steps and using Exchange ActiveSync instead of IMAP, you can enjoy faster syncing and more reliable email communication with your Gmail account.
